The story begins with Shobhana, son-in-law of the Vishnu-devoted King Muchukunda. Visiting his in-laws during Kartik, he was forced to keep the Rama Ekadashi fast — the king had ordered that no one in the kingdom, not even animals, would eat or drink that day. Shobhana was too weak. He died before sunrise. Yet the merit of that one reluctant fast won him Devapura, a jewelled city on Mount Mandarachala — but the city was unstable, because his fast was joyless. A travelling brahmin carried word back to his wife Chandrabhaga, who had kept Ekadashi since she was eight. Guided by the sage Vamadeva, she transferred the merit of her lifelong fasts to her husband, making Devapura eternal and joining him there. Tulsi leaves offered to Vishnu on this day are said to erase the sins of past births.
