The story sits behind the ritual. When Vamana pressed King Bali into the netherworld with his third step, Vishnu granted him one boon — to return each year and see his people. Today is that visit. In Maharashtra and Karnataka, his figure and that of his queen Vindhyavali are drawn at the threshold in five colours, and offerings are placed there rather than at the household shrine — he is a guest, not a deity. The same tithi carries two other rites. In Braj and Pushtimarg temples, devotees build Annakut — a 'mountain of food', often 56 dishes (Chhappan Bhog) — recalling the Govardhan hill Krishna lifted for seven days against Indra's storm. And by old lore, Shiva and Parvati played dice today; winning at play is held lucky for the whole year, which is why Diwali card games run late into this night.
