Dwadashi
Significance of Govatsa Dwadashi
The name joins two Sanskrit words: go, the cow, and vatsa, her calf. Dwadashi is the twelfth lunar day. On this day the cow is honoured as Gau Mata, the mother who nourishes a home. She is worshipped with her calf at her side.
The day comes on the waning Dwadashi, one day ahead of Dhanteras. Maharashtra knows it as Vasu Baras and counts it as the opening day of Diwali. Many homes draw the season’s first rangoli on this day and light the first diyas at dusk.
Mothers keep the vrat, praying for their children to be healthy and long-lived. Farming households treat it as a day of thanks to their cattle, which pull the plough and give milk all year.
The story of Govatsa Dwadashi
Kamadhenu, the cow who grants every wish, is said to have appeared when the ocean was churned. Nandini was her daughter, and she lived at sage Vasishtha’s ashram, meeting every need of his rituals and his guests. Honouring a cow and calf on Govatsa Dwadashi is read as honouring Nandini, and every cow through her. Some families also believe Lakshmi is present in the cow on this day.
A katha linked to the Bhavishya Purana tells of a young queen who neglected her cattle and lost her son to illness. Grieving, she saw the cows mourning their own calves and turned to the devas for help. She kept the Nandini vrat on this Dwadashi and vowed to care for every animal, and Nandini restored her son to life.
How to do Govatsa Dwadashi puja at home
- Prepare the doorway In the morning, sweep the threshold and make a rangoli there. Set aside a few diyas for the evening.
- Begin the fast Women keeping the vrat give up wheat and every cow’s-milk product, including curd and ghee, for the day. How strictly this is kept varies from family to family.
- Find a cow, or prepare a murti Go to a cow kept at home, by neighbours or at a gaushala. With no cow nearby, set up a small cow-and-calf murti of clay or metal, or a picture of Krishna among his cows.
- Bathe and mark the cow Do the puja in the Pradosh window shown above. Wash the cow, or at least her hooves, and put turmeric and kumkum on her forehead and on the calf’s.
- Make the offerings Garland her and offer flowers, water, akshata (unbroken rice), incense and a lit lamp. Some households also spread a cloth over her back.
- Feed her Give green grass, a little jaggery and soaked grain such as moong or bajra. Never offer anything that could make an animal ill.
- Aarti and circling Wave the aarti lamp, then circle the cow slowly, staying well clear of her hind legs. Ask for blessings on your children.
- Light the diyas and eat Place lit diyas at the entrance as Diwali begins. End the fast with food that has no wheat or milk in it, for example bajra bhakri and a vegetable.

Vasu Baras in Maharashtra
In Marathi homes Diwali begins with Vasu Baras. The house is cleaned, and many families make the year’s first Diwali rangoli at the door and light a row of lamps after sunset.
Mostly it is mothers who keep the vrat. They go without wheat, milk, curd and ghee until the puja is done. On this day, families say, the cow’s milk is meant for her own calf. In many homes the meal that follows is bajra bhakri, served with gavar (cluster beans) and moong.
Village families wash, garland and mark their cows in the evening. In cities, a small murti of a cow and calf often takes their place, and many people give to a gaushala they know.
Nandini Vrat
Govatsa Dwadashi is also kept as the Nandini Vrat, named for Kamadhenu’s daughter. Women observe it as a fast for the welfare of their children.
In the story, the queen is told to honour every cow as she would Kamadhenu. In the evening worship, songs about Krishna’s love for his cows are often sung.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Govatsa Dwadashi 2026 timings?
Govatsa puja (Pradosh Kaal): 5:43 PM – 8:18 PM. Times are in IST for Ujjain.
Is Vasu Baras the first day of Diwali?
In Maharashtra it is. Marathi families begin their Diwali on Vasu Baras, the day before Dhanteras, and many light the first lamps of the festival that evening.
Is Vasu Baras the same as Govatsa Dwadashi and Vagh Baras?
All three names belong to one day. Govatsa Dwadashi is the Sanskrit name and Vasu Baras is used in Marathi. Gujarat calls it Vagh Baras and uses it to clear old accounts.
Why do mothers avoid wheat and milk on Govatsa Dwadashi?
It is a long-standing custom of the vrat. Families usually say the milk is the calf’s on this day, so the mother who fasts does not take it. Each family follows its own practice.
Can I do Govatsa Dwadashi puja without a cow?
Yes. A small cow-and-calf murti, or a picture of Krishna with cows, can receive the same offerings at home. A donation to a gaushala is another way to mark the day.
What should be fed to the cow on Vasu Baras?
Green grass, soaked moong or bajra, gram and some jaggery are usual. Some families give a wheat preparation to the cow. Keep to food that is safe for her.
Can Rama Ekadashi and Govatsa Dwadashi fall on the same day?
Yes, it happens when Ekadashi holds at sunrise and Dwadashi begins later in the day. Families keeping both usually follow their own panchang for the food rules.
When is Govatsa Dwadashi in 2026?
Govatsa Dwadashi 2026 falls on Thursday, 5 November 2026. Dwadashi tithi runs from 10:36 AM, 5 Nov to 10:31 AM, 6 Nov IST, as calculated for Ujjain. Times shift by a few minutes for other cities.
What is Govatsa Dwadashi?
The opening day of the five-day Diwali cycle in Maharashtra, falling one day before Dhanteras. Mothers worship a cow with her calf and fast from wheat and all milk products — even ghee and curd — praying for the long life of their children.
Why is Govatsa Dwadashi observed?
The Bhavishya Purana prescribes this vrat on Kartika Krishna Dwadashi, and it is also called Nandini Vrat after Nandini, the daughter of Kamadhenu — the wish-granting cow. The name Vasu Baras points to Vasu, a presiding lord of wealth worshipped alongside the cow, which is why the day opens Diwali rather than sitting apart from it. The ritual is specific: the cow and calf are bathed, marked with turmeric and vermilion, and fed jaggery and soaked gram — not milk, since milk products are forbidden to the observer all day. If no cow is at hand, a clay image or a drawing of cow-and-calf is worshipped instead. In Gujarat the same day is Vagh Baras, when traders close their old chopda (account books) before opening fresh ledgers at Chopda Pujan on Lakshmi Puja night.
What are the other names for Govatsa Dwadashi?
Govatsa Dwadashi is also known as Vasu Baras and Nandini Vrat.
Which prarthanas are recited on Govatsa Dwadashi?
