Frequently Asked Questions
When is Utpanna Ekadashi in 2026?
Utpanna Ekadashi 2026 falls on Friday, 4 December 2026. Ekadashi tithi runs from 11:04 PM, 3 Dec to 11:45 PM, 4 Dec IST, as calculated for Ujjain. Times shift by a few minutes for other cities.
What is Utpanna Ekadashi?
Utpanna means 'born' — this is the day Goddess Ekadashi sprang from Vishnu's body to slay the demon Mura while Vishnu slept. Falling on Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha (Kartika in Amanta regions), it is treated as the birthday of Ekadashi herself and the day new observers begin their yearly vrata.
Why is Utpanna Ekadashi observed?
The story comes from the Ekadashi Mahatmya. While Vishnu rested in Yoga Nidra, the demon Mur crept in to kill him. A radiant goddess sprang from Vishnu's body, lured the demon into single combat, and cut him down. Pleased, Vishnu named her Ekadashi and promised that anyone who fasted on her day would have their sins destroyed — a merit greater than the vratas of Tritiya, Ashtami, Navami or Chaturdashi. That is why Utpanna Ekadashi is the traditional starting point for a year-long Ekadashi vow, and why both Vishnu and Goddess Ekadashi (his Yoga Maya, or power of illusion) are worshipped together. The katha prescribes a light meal on Dashami evening, a sankalpa (vow) at sunrise, a midday bath after applying mud paste, a night vigil chanting Hari's names, and gifts to Brahmins the next morning before breaking the fast.
Which prarthanas are recited on Utpanna Ekadashi?
Vishnu Shodasa Nama Stotram, Dwadashakshara Mantra and Vishnu Shanthakaram Mantra are recited on Utpanna Ekadashi. You can listen to them with audio on this page.
