In Odia homes, mothers cook food the night before Pausha Shukla Dashami and offer it cold to the rising sun — one named portion for each child. The day recalls Samba, Krishna's son, cured of leprosy at Konark after twelve years of penance to Surya.
Why is Samba Dasmi observed?
The Bhavishya and Samba Puranas tell why this is a mother's festival. Samba — son of Krishna and Jambavati — was cursed by his own father after he impersonated Krishna before the junior queens. He fell to leprosy and prayed to Surya for twelve years on the Chandrabhaga coast before he was healed. Tradition credits him with founding India's great sun shrines, from Konark to Modhera in Gujarat and Markand in Kashmir; the Konark temple itself was built much later, around 1250, by Narasimha I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. The Odia ritual mirrors the story's anxiety over a child's body. A mother prepares khichdi, udiya puli (a sweet rice pitha) and ghadghadia tarkari (a mixed-vegetable curry) the previous evening, sets aside a separate plate in each child's name, and reads the Samba Dasami Brata Katha at sunrise.
