The story comes from the Balakanda of Valmiki's Ramayana and Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas: King Janaka set a challenge that whoever could string Shiva's bow, the Pinaka, would marry his daughter Sita. Rama not only lifted it but broke it while stringing. At Janakpur's Janaki Mandir — believed to mark Sita's birthplace — celebrations stretch about a week. Pilgrims bathe in the local Mithilanchal tanks of Dhanushsagar, Gangasagar and Argaza before the temple wedding in the evening. One quiet detail: many families in Mithila avoid fixing their own weddings on this date. Rama and Sita's marriage, though divine, ended in exile and separation — so priests are usually consulted before treating the tithi as auspicious for a human bride.
