What is Radha Kunda Snan?
On Kartik Krishna Ashtami, pilgrims bathe at midnight in Radha Kunda at the foot of Govardhan — the spot where, lore says, Krishna killed the bull-demon Arishtasura and then dug a pond with his heel to wash off the sin of cow-slaughter Radha had teasingly accused him of.
Why is Radha Kunda Snan observed?
Two stories share this night. In the Gaudiya retelling, after Krishna's heel-strike summoned every sacred tirtha into Shyama Kunda, Radha and her sakhis dug the adjacent Radha Kunda with their bangles — so the twin ponds are read as Krishna and Radha themselves, side by side. Rupa Goswami's Upadesamrita ranks a single dip here above all of Vrindavan and Govardhan. The same date marks a second event: Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's rediscovery of the long-lost kunda at Arita Gaon in the 16th century, which is why Bengali pilgrims add dipa-dana — floating oil lamps — to the midnight bath. The North Indian practice is more domestic. Childless couples wade in together and offer a kushmanda (white petha pumpkin) wrapped in red cloth to Radha Rani, asking for a child; many return the next year to give thanks.
