What is Dahikala Handi?
On the day after Janmashtami, Maharashtra's Govinda Pathaks — registered pyramid teams — climb seven or eight tiers high to smash a pot of curd hung 30 to 50 feet above the street. The pot's contents, called Gopal Kala, are the real prasad: a mix of curd, beaten rice and butter.
Why is Dahikala Handi observed?
Gopal Kala is the dish that gives the festival its older name. In the Bhagavata story, Krishna and his cowherd friends pool whatever lunch they have brought into the forest — curd, poha (beaten rice), puffed rice, cucumber, a little sugar — and eat it together off a banana leaf. The pot smashed each year holds that same humble mix, which then showers the crowd below and is shared as prasad. The pyramid itself echoes the other famous childhood story: butter hung from the rafters by Gokul's women, and Krishna's gang stacking up to reach it. Mumbai turned the ritual into a sport in the 20th century, with Pathaks competing for cash purses. After repeated deaths from falls, the Bombay High Court capped pyramid height and set a minimum age for climbers; helmets and safety harnesses are now standard.
