The most retold story is the 'Mara–Rama' trick. The robber Ratnakar, too steeped in sin to utter the holy name 'Rama', was told by Narada to chant 'Mara' (death) instead. Repeated without pause, the syllables folded back into 'Ra-ma, Ra-ma'. He sat so still that an anthill — valmika in Sanskrit — grew over him, and he emerged as Valmiki. Rabindranath Tagore set this transformation to music in his 1881 opera Valmiki Pratibha. The Valmiki (Balmiki) community treats him as a deity in his own right, and holds the Yogavasishtha — a long dialogue between Rama and sage Vasistha — as their second sacred text after the Ramayana. In Chennai, the Arulmigu Valmiki Munivar temple at Thiruvanmiyur, said to be over 1,300 years old, marks the spot where the sage is believed to have rested after finishing the epic.
