The vrata's signature is not the fast but the couple-worship. The Skanda Purana asks the devotee to honour a devoted husband and wife as living forms of Parvati and Paramesvara — wash their feet, feed them a full meal, and eat only once oneself that day. The phala-shruti (fruit-story) is the tale of princess Simantini, who worshipped two young boys who had come disguised as a couple; her devotion was so complete that the boys were transformed into an actual married pair. Sage Vasishta is said to have won the chaste Arundhati through the same vow. Prathama Somavara is when the sankalpa is taken for the whole Karthika series — usually four Mondays, sometimes five. The day is especially observed in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, where Karthika Masam, not Shravan, is the prime Shiva month.
