Subrahmanya Sasthi

About
The Kukke sthala purana ties this day to two linked events. Shanmukha's mahabhisheka and divine marriage were held on Margashira shukla shashti at Kumara Parvata; the consecrated waters poured down the hill and became the Kumaradhara river that still flows past the temple. Around the same time, Vasuki — king of serpents — was hiding from Garuda in the Biladwara caves. Murugan gave him sanctuary, and the shrine's sanctum places Vasuki and Shesha on the pedestal with Subrahmanya, so worship of the snakes is worship of the Lord himself. This is why Kukke is the principal destination for Sarpa Dosha and Kala Sarpa Dosha rites — Ashlesha Bali and Sarpa Samskara — and one of seven Mukti Kshetras where families perform rites for the departed.
