The heart of Sitalsasthi is not a temple ritual but a civic wedding. Two Sambalpur families volunteer — one as Parvati's parents, one as Shiva's — and the rites follow Odia custom from betrothal to bidaai (the bride's farewell). On the wedding night, Shiva's barat sets out from Nandapada to fetch the bride from Jhaduapada. The procession is the spectacle: Ghumura drummers, Sambalpuri folk troupes, Naga sadhus with matted hair, fire-eaters, and tableaux of Puranic scenes wind through the old town till dawn. The timing is deliberate. 'Sitala' means cool, and Jyeshtha Shashthi sits at the hottest point of the year, just before the monsoon breaks. Farmers in the Mahanadi basin read the divine wedding as the cue that rains — and the sowing season — are days away.
