Yamuna Jayanti marks the river-goddess's descent to earth on Chaitra Shukla Shashthi, during Chaitra Navratri. Unlike Ganga, who promises liberation, Yamuna — twin sister of Yama, the god of death — is said to free bathers from the fear of death itself. Vishram Ghat in Mathura is the main centre.

Yamuna is the daughter of Surya, the sun god, and the twin sister of Yama. Because of that sibling bond, a dip in her waters on this day is believed to soften Yama's judgement — a promise quite different from Ganga's offer of moksha. She is also Krishna's queen Kalindi, named for Mount Kalinda where she rises. The Garga Samhita tells how she came down to Vraja to be near him, which is why Mathura and Vrindavan, not Yamunotri, lead the celebrations. At Vishram Ghat in Mathura and Kesi Ghat in Vrindavan, devotees dress the river as a bride — offering a red chunari (veil), sindoor, bangles and sweets to the current. Followers of the Pushtimarg sect recite Vallabhacharya's Yamunashtakam, eight verses to the goddess.
