Tradition holds that at the beginning of creation, when nothing existed, Shiva himself worshipped the unmanifest goddess so that creation could begin — and she emerged as Siddhidatri from his own left side, granting him the ashta siddhis, the eight great spiritual powers, before any creation was possible. This origin is why she is linked to Ardhanarishvara, the combined form of Shiva and Parvati as one being, representing the completion the nine days build toward. On this closing day, nine young girls are invited into homes, washed, fed and given gifts as embodiments of the goddess, marking Navratri's turn toward Vijayadashami the following day.
