Ayudha Puja
Born from the tenth-day truce after Durga's nine-night war with Mahishasura, when the gods' weapons were laid down and worshipped. Observed on Mahanavami across the southern states, it asks farmers, mechanics and clerks to set down their tools, smear them with sandal and kumkum, and treat them as living deities for a day.

About
The Devi Mahatmya (part of the Markandeya Purana, 5th–6th century CE) tells how each god surrendered his weapon to Durga — Shiva's trident, Vishnu's discus, Indra's thunderbolt — so she could fight Mahishasura. Ayudha Puja honours that moment of laying arms down. In Mysore, the Wodeyar kings turned it into state ritual: the royal sword (Pattada Katti) is worshipped on Mahanavami and paraded on caparisoned elephants, camels and horses. For craftsmen it plays the role that Vishwakarma Puja plays in the north — the carpenter's plane, the tailor's machine, the farmer's plough are cleaned and garlanded. In its modern stretch it has become Vahana Puja: cars and scooters are tied with mango leaves and banana saplings, and an ash-gourd smeared in turmeric and vermilion is smashed before the vehicle to absorb the evil eye. The same day, in much of the south, doubles as Saraswati Puja, so books and instruments share the altar with hammers and keys.

The Dharmayana app keeps track of all upcoming festivals on the Hindu calendar and reminds you in advance.

Personalised Astrology Around Festivals

Festivals are also a good time to look at your kundali — many families plan sankalp, donations or new beginnings around them.

Inside the app you can:

  • Generate your personal Vedic kundali
  • Talk to a Jyotisha for guidance around career, relationships or health
  • Run kundali matching before fixing a marriage during the festival season

All of this is available inside the Dharmayana app — no fixed schedule, use it whenever you need it.
