The day's signature ritual is Shami (or Banni) puja, traditionally done by kings and warriors at a Shami tree on the town's north-east. Two stories anchor it. Arjuna, ending the Pandavas' year of disguise, pulled his hidden bow from a Shami tree and routed the Kaurava army single-handed. In the Kautsa legend, Rama showered an apta tree with gold leaves to pay a student's gurudakshina — which is why Marathis still exchange apta leaves as "gold" today. The warrior thread runs through regional forms. In Mysore, the Wodeyars' Jamboo Savari carries Chamundeshwari on a golden howdah from the palace to Bannimantapa to worship the Banni tree.
