The four-day version follows specific nakshatras rather than tithis: Avahan (invocation) on Mula, the main Puja on Purva Ashadha, Balidan on Uttara Ashadha, and Visarjan (immersion) on Shravana. The ritual prescriptions come from texts like the Vratraj and Rudrayamal. In Kerala and Tamil Nadu the simpler three-day form is common — books and palm-leaf manuscripts are placed before the goddess on Ashtami in a rite called Puja Vypu, and the household stops reading them until they are taken back on Vijayadashami morning. That return is paired with Ezhuthiniruttu, when a child is guided to trace the first letter in a tray of rice. The same day is also Ayudha Puja, so tools and vehicles sit alongside books before the goddess.
