About
Her name means 'she of smoke'. The Pranatoshini Tantra tells how Sati, faint with hunger, swallowed Shiva whole; when he asked to be released, he then cursed her to wear widow's form forever. A second account in the Swatantra Tantra has her rise from the smoke of Sati's self-immolation at Daksha's yajna. Her two emblems carry the teaching. The winnowing basket stands for viveka — the skill of separating the lasting from the passing, as grain from chaff. The crow, eater of carrion, marks her rule over loss and decay. Because she embodies widowhood, married couples generally do not worship her at home; the rite belongs to tantrics and renunciates, who seek her as the giver of siddhis and as the planetary remedy for Ketu.
