Mahesh Navami
Mahesh Navami marks the day a community changed varna: the Maheshwaris trace their origin to Jyeshtha Shukla Navami of Yudhishthir Samvat 9, when Shiva and Parvati revived 72 stone-cursed Kshatriya warriors on condition that they lay down arms and take up trade.

About
The Vrat Katha recited on this day tells of King Khadgalsena's son Sujan Kunwar, who was warned by court astrologers not to travel north before he turned twenty. He broke the rule on a hunt, disturbed a group of sages deep in penance, and the sages cursed his 72 warrior companions to stone. The king, his queen Chandravati, and the warriors' wives pleaded for mercy. The sages said only Shiva and Parvati could undo it. After their worship, the warriors came back to life — but Shiva told them to put down their weapons and live as traders. He gave them his own name: Maheshwari, "of Mahesh." This is why a community of merchants worships Shiva as Kula Devata (clan deity), and why the festival is also called Maheshwari Vansh Utpatti Diwas — the community's founding day.

Festival Date, Tithi & Muhurat

Hindu festivals are tied to a specific Tithi, not a fixed date — so the day shifts every year and even varies slightly across cities.

Open the Panchanga for the festival day to see the exact Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and Shubh Muhurat for pooja in your location.

The Dharmayana app keeps track of all upcoming festivals on the Hindu calendar and reminds you in advance.

Personalised Astrology Around Festivals

Festivals are also a good time to look at your kundali — many families plan sankalp, donations or new beginnings around them.

Inside the app you can:

  • Generate your personal Vedic kundali
  • Talk to a Jyotisha for guidance around career, relationships or health
  • Run kundali matching before fixing a marriage during the festival season

All of this is available inside the Dharmayana app — no fixed schedule, use it whenever you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hindu festivals — like Diwali, Navratri, Mahashivaratri, Holi and Janmashtami — mark sacred moments tied to deities, seasons and lunar/solar cycles. Each festival has its own story, vrat, prarthana and rituals, and is timed using the Panchanga so the date moves slightly every year against the Gregorian calendar.
