About
Ramakrishna's life is unusual for one fact: he treated spiritual paths as experiments. Under the Bhairavi Brahmani he completed Tantric sadhana in the 1860s. Under the wandering monk Totapuri he entered nirvikalpa samadhi — the non-dual absorption of Advaita Vedanta — in 1864. He then lived as a Muslim, and later as a Christian, reporting the same realisation each time. From this came his line "yato mat, tato path" — as many faiths, so many paths. Two other details anchor the day. In 1872 he worshipped his wife Sarada Devi as the Divine Mother in the Shodashi Puja, an act later read as the seed of the Ramakrishna Order's view of women. At Belur Math the Tithi Puja follows the lunar date — mangalarati before dawn, homa, and Vedic chanting — while the public birthday on the Math grounds falls on the solar date and draws lay crowds.
