Each year the chariots are built fresh from neem wood and scrapped after use — Nandighosha for Jagannatha (45 feet, 16 wheels, yellow), Taladhwaja for Balabhadra (red-green, 14 wheels) and Darpadalana for Subhadra (red-black, 12 wheels). Before the pull, the Gajapati king of Puri sweeps the chariot platforms with a gold-handled broom — the Chhera Pahanra ritual that publicly equates king and sweeper before the deity. Gundicha is treated as the aunt's house where the siblings holiday for nine days; the return trip is the Bahuda Yatra. On the way back, Jagannatha halts at the Mausi Maa shrine for poda pitha, a baked rice-and-jaggery cake said to be his favourite. The deities' wooden bodies themselves are replaced only in Nabakalebara years, set by a rare double Ashadha.
