The mantra chanted while tying the rakhi gives the day away. It says: I bind you with the same thread that bound Bali, the demon-king — a reference to Vamana subduing Bali, not to sibling affection. Scripturally the original 'rakhi' was a raksha potli: a tiny cloth pouch holding unbroken rice, white mustard seeds and gold thread, worn as a protective charm. The same Shravana Purnima carries other observances stacked on top of it. Brahmin men perform Upakarma — called Avani Avittam in Tamil Nadu and Jandhyala Purnima in Andhra — and change their yajnopavita (the sacred thread worn across the chest). Coastal Maharashtra marks Narali Purnima, when fishermen offer coconuts to the sea as the monsoon winds turn. The day is also Hayagriva Jayanti, the appearance of Vishnu's horse-headed form.
