Dev Diwali
The night the gods are said to descend to bathe in the Ganga at Kashi. Held on Kartik Purnima, fifteen days after Diwali, Varanasi's ghats from Ravidas to Rajghat are lined with lakhs of earthen diyas — a single ribbon of lamplight marking Shiva's burning of the three demon-cities of Tripurasura.

About
The festival's other name, Tripurotsav, points to its origin story. The asura Tripurasura had defeated the Devas and seized their kingdom from three flying fortresses — Tripura, the 'three cities' — that could only be destroyed when aligned in a single instant. Shiva burned all three with one arrow on this Kartik full moon, earning the title Tripurari. In Varanasi the gods are believed to come down that night to bathe in the Ganga, and the diyas on the ghats are lit to welcome them. The day before, Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, recalls Vishnu offering Shiva a thousand lotuses; devotees take a pre-dawn dip at Manikarnika Ghat. The same Kartik Purnima is also kept across north India as Guru Nanak's birth anniversary and as the closing day of the month-long Kartik Snana bathing vow.
