The Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Bhadrapada honours Heramba — a rare five-faced, ten-armed Ganesha who rides a lion, not the usual mouse. The name means 'Protector of the Weak' (Brahmavaivarta Purana), and the vrat is held to be especially potent against grave, seemingly hopeless troubles.

The story behind the fast comes from the Mahabharata's Nala–Damayanti episode. After Queen Damayanti was separated from King Nala, Sage Sharabhanga told her to observe the Bhadrapada Krishna Chaturthi vrat and worship Heramba Ganapati. She was reunited with Nala within three months — which is why this particular Sankashti is invoked for reunion and rescue from desperate situations, not just routine obstacle-clearing. The five-headed, lion-mounted Heramba is one of the rarer of Ganesha's 32 forms and holds a special place in Tantric worship, with a strong following in Nepal. As with every Sankashti, the fast runs from sunrise to moonrise and is broken only after Chandra Darshana (sighting the moon); the meal is kept to fruit, tubers and sabudana — no grains.
