About
The name comes from kajri — the monsoon folk-song tradition of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, sung by women through the rainy night about a wife's longing for her absent husband. In Mirzapur and Banaras, these songs are a genre in their own right. Because the festival falls in the waning fortnight, women wait out a long fast and break it only when the moon is sighted — unlike Hariyali Teej, which sits on a waxing third. In some regions it is called Satudi Teej, after the 'satudi' or sindhara gifts of sweets, bangles and clothes sent by a woman's parents to her marital home. Rajasthan adds its own layer: in Bundi, the idol of Teej Mata is paraded with camels, elephants and folk dancers performing Ghoomar, Kalbeliya and Bhavai.
