Papankusha Ekadashi
Papankusha means 'the goad against sin' — papa (sin) and ankusha (the elephant hook). Falling on the bright Ekadashi of Ashwin, just after Pitru Paksha, it is observed to pull both the faster and ten generations of ancestors out of Yama's reach by worshipping Vishnu as Padmanabha.

About
The vrat-katha comes from the Brahma-Vaivarta Purana, where Krishna tells Yudhishthira the story of Krodhana, a cruel hunter dragged before Yama at death. On Sage Angira's advice he had observed this one Ekadashi before dying, and that single fast lifted him to Vishnu's abode. Two details set this day apart from other Ekadashis. First, the deity worshipped is specifically Padmanabha — Vishnu reclining on Shesha with a lotus rising from his navel — not the standing or seated forms used on other fast days. Second, the merit is said to liberate ten generations of ancestors on the mother's side, father's side, and spouse's side — an unusually wide net, which is why the day falls just after Pitru Paksha, the fortnight of offerings to the dead. A night-long jagran of chanting Vishnu's names completes the observance.
