Each lunar month's Krishna Chaturdashi is Masik Shivaratri — the same tithi that becomes Maha Shivaratri once a year in Magha/Phalguna. The puja window is Nishita Kaal, the two-ghati (about 48 minutes) midnight slot when Shiva is said to have appeared as the Linga. A Tuesday occurrence is held to be especially potent.

The fullest form of the vrat splits the night into four Prahars and worships Shiva four times — each watch with its own abhisheka: water in the first, curd in the second, ghee in the third, honey in the fourth. The linga is then dressed with bilva (bel) leaves, believed to cool Shiva, along with aak (madar) flowers and vibhuti — sacred ash made from dried cow dung. The pattern comes from the Shivaratri Vrat Katha of the hunter Guru-Druha, who, perched in a bel tree waiting for prey, kept dropping leaves through the night onto a linga hidden below — unknowingly completing all four Prahar pujas and earning moksha. Parana, the breaking of the fast, is done after sunrise the next morning but ideally before Chaturdashi tithi ends.
