Akal Bodhon
Akal Bodhon is the twilight rite that opens Durga Puja by 'waking' the goddess out of season — the gods are said to sleep through Dakshinayana, and Durga's true worship slot was spring (Chaitra). Performed on Shashthi at the foot of a Bel tree, with a water-filled kalash placed at its base.

About
The story comes from the 14th-century Bengali Ramayana of Krittivas, not the older Valmiki version. Stalled against Ravana and Kumbhakarna, Rama decides to invoke Durga — but it is Ashwin, the wrong half of the year for her worship, so the awakening is 'akal', untimely. He gathers 108 lotuses for the offering; Durga quietly hides one to test him. Finding only 107, Rama prepares to pluck out his own eye — famously lotus-shaped — as the missing flower. She appears, stops him, and grants the boon. The ritual today mirrors this invocation: at Sandhya (twilight) on Shashthi, a priest installs a kalash at the base of a Bel tree and recites the Bodhon mantras. The same sitting also covers Kalparambha — the sankalpa, or formal vow, to carry the puja through Saptami, Ashtami and Navami.
