The fifth day of Shravana's bright fortnight commemorates Sage Astika halting King Janamejaya's snake-sacrifice — saving the Nagas mid-flame. Households leave the earth undug, skip frying, and offer raw milk, turmeric and kumkum at anthills and snake-holes to twelve named serpents led by Ananta, Vasuki and Takshaka.

The first Monday of Shravana — Prathama Somavara — traditionally opens the Solah Somwar vow: sixteen straight Monday fasts begun on this day to seek a spouse or marital welfare. In North India it also launches the Kanwar Yatra, when devotees walk home with Ganga water to bathe a Shiva linga.
