Mangala Gauri Vratha - Trithiya
The third Tuesday of Shravana in the Mangala Gauri vrata cycle. A new bride keeps this fast for the first five years of her marriage — sixteen laddus, sixteen fruits, sixteen wicks in the lamp, all offered to a small Gauri idol moulded from wheat-flour dough.

About
The number sixteen runs through every part of this vrata. Sixteen is the count of everything offered — laddus, betel leaves, fruits, types of flowers and leaves, and cotton wicks in the ghee lamp. The Gauri image itself is not metal but a fresh dough figure, shaped that morning and dissolved in water once the day ends. The katha read aloud is the story of a merchant's son cursed to die young, whose life Gauri extends after his bride's devotion — a tale carried in the Vrata-katha sections tied to the Bhavishya Purana. The first year's puja is usually done at the bride's mother's house, with the mother supplying the thali. In the fifth year comes the udyapan — the concluding rite — where the sixteen sets are gifted to a Brahmin couple or to the mother-in-law, and the vrata is formally closed.

Festival Date, Tithi & Muhurat

Hindu festivals are tied to a specific Tithi, not a fixed date — so the day shifts every year and even varies slightly across cities.

The Dharmayana app keeps track of all upcoming festivals on the Hindu calendar and reminds you in advance.

Personalised Astrology Around Festivals

Frequently Asked Questions

Hindu festivals — like Diwali, Navratri, Mahashivaratri, Holi and Janmashtami — mark sacred moments tied to deities, seasons and lunar/solar cycles. Each festival has its own story, vrat, prarthana and rituals, and is timed using the Panchanga so the date moves slightly every year against the Gregorian calendar.
