Marks the birth of Goswami Tulsidas (d. 1623), the Awadhi poet who recast the Ramayana for ordinary villagers instead of Sanskrit scholars. Observed on Shravana Shukla Saptami — the same lunar date he began composing the Ramcharitmanas in Ayodhya in 1574.

Tulsidas wrote the Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi, the spoken tongue of the Gangetic plains, so farmers and women could hear Rama's story directly. Sanskrit pandits of Varanasi attacked him for it. He did not translate Valmiki — his main source was the Adhyatma Ramayana, which frames the tale as Shiva telling it to Parvati on the lake of the mind (manas). Legend says he began the work on Ram Navami in Ayodhya in 1574 and finished in two years, seven months, and twenty-six days. Tradition also credits him with founding the Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple at Varanasi, after a vision of Hanuman on the banks of the Assi, and with shaping the Ramlila plays still staged across north India each autumn.
