Chapter 8 of the Durga Saptashati tells why this form was needed. The demon Raktabija ('blood-seed') had a boon: every drop of his blood that touched the ground sprang up as a new demon, so wounding him only multiplied the army. To end this, Kali — identified in Puranic tradition with Kalaratri — spread her tongue across the battlefield and drank the blood mid-fall, letting Chandika finish him. That story explains her look: lolling tongue, disheveled hair, garland of refulgence, a donkey for a mount instead of the lion the other Durgas ride. She is said to govern Shani (Saturn), the slow planet of hard lessons. The jaggery offered on Saptami is dark and intense, like her — and her epithet Shubhankari, 'doer of good', marks the paradox: a terrifying outside, boons for those who approach.
