The four-month Chaturmasya vow imposes month-by-month food restrictions — no leafy greens in Shravana, no yogurt in Bhadra, no milk in Ashvina, no dal or seeded vegetables in Kartika — and this Ekadashi formally lifts them. The Padma Purana places it at the centre of Vishnu's calendar, calling Kartika the dearest month, Tulasi the dearest plant, and Ekadashi the dearest day. From sundown onwards households begin Tulasi Vivah, the ceremonial wedding of the Tulasi plant to a Shaligrama stone (a fossil form of Vishnu); per the Vishnuyamala, the bride-plant should have been watered and nurtured for three months in readiness. In two Rama temples of Saurashtra a wedding invitation is sent from the bride's shrine to the groom's, and a baraat of Lalji — a child form of Vishnu — processes through the streets.
