About

The story comes from the Bhavishyottara Purana, told by Krishna to Yudhishthira. The demon Murasura had defeated the gods, so Vishnu fought him at Badarikashrama and then withdrew to a Himalayan cave to rest. Murasura crept in to kill the sleeping god. A radiant goddess emerged from Vishnu's body — born of his eleven senses — and cut the demon down. Vishnu blessed her: anyone who fasts on her day, the eleventh tithi, will have their sins burned and reach Vaikuntha. That is why this particular Ekadashi is treated as the seed of all the others. The fast is strict — no grains, no pulses, often no water — and is broken the next morning at Dwadashi within a fixed window called parana. Tulsi worship is added because the day falls in Margashirsha, the month Krishna claims as his own in the Gita.
