Frequently Asked Questions
When is Sasthi in 2027?
Sasthi 2027 falls on Monday, 6 September 2027. Shashti tithi runs from 11:17 AM, 5 Sep to 10:58 AM, 6 Sep IST, as calculated for Ujjain. Times shift by a few minutes for other cities.
What is Sasthi?
Sasthi Vrat falls on the sixth tithi of every bright fortnight — a monthly fast for Skanda. When Sashti starts between sunrise and sunset on a day still carrying Panchami, that day is chosen, a rule traced to the Dharmasindhu and Nirnayasindhu.
Why is Sasthi observed?
The number six is Murugan's signature. He has six faces as Shanmukha, six hill shrines across Tamil Nadu (the Arupadaiveedu), a six-syllable seed mantra — Sa-Ra-Va-Na-Bha-Va — and won his defining battle in six days. That war is the reason the sixth tithi belongs to him. According to the Skanda lore retold in the Shiva Purana and Kalidasa's Kumarasambhava, Parvati handed him the Vel (a lance), and he used it to cut down the asura brothers Surapadman and Simhamukha along with Tarakasura, freeing the devas on the sixth day. Fasting practice on Sasthi varies: some take one meal at noon or after moonrise, others keep to fruit and water. The annual Aippasi (October–November) Sashti is the biggest of the twelve; the rest are observed quietly at home or at Subrahmanya temples.
Which prarthanas are recited on Sasthi?
Skanda Gayatri Mantra and Skanda Shasti Kavasam are recited on Sasthi. You can listen to them with audio on this page.
