The date itself is the giveaway. Yajurvedis hold Upakarma on Shravana Purnima, but Rigvedis wait for the moon to reach Shravana Nakshatra — the star ruled by Vishnu, patron of the Rigveda's preserved sound. The two dates can fall a day or two apart. The morning begins with Kamokarsheet Japa, a prayaschitta (atonement) for any mantras mis-chanted or skipped over the previous year. The old sacred thread is then discarded and a new one worn while reciting the Yajnopavita Dharana mantra. Brahmacharis read a few verses from each Veda, symbolically reopening the year of study that will be formally closed at Utsarjana in Pausha–Magha. The next morning is Gayatri Japam, when the Gayatri is repeated 1008 times to seal the renewal.
