About
Born at Sriperumbudur in 1017 CE as Lakshmana, Ramanuja was sent to Kanchipuram to study under Yadavaprakasha, a teacher in Shankara's Advaita lineage. He broke with his guru over the idea of an impersonal Absolute and later served as priest at the Varadaraja Perumal temple at Kanchi. He then succeeded Yamunacharya at Srirangam, which became the seat of Sri Vaishnavism. His three core works — the Sri Bhashya on the Brahma Sutras, the Gita Bhashya, and the Vedartha Sangraha on the Upanishads — argued that release (moksha) is not merger into a featureless Brahman but the soul's joy in serving a personal God, Vishnu with Lakshmi. After him his followers split into the Vadakalai (Sanskrit-leaning, northern) and Tenkalai (Tamil, southern) schools over how God's grace reaches the devotee.
