Her name comes from the Sanskrit 'Valga' — the bridle that controls a horse — so Bagalamukhi is literally the goddess who reins in. The Satya Yuga story has Vishnu doing a thousand years of penance on the banks of the Haridra Sarovara in Saurashtra, a lake stained yellow with turmeric, until the Devi rose from its waters and stilled the storm. That origin fixes her colour code: golden skin, yellow sari, yellow lotuses, japa counted on a turmeric-dyed mala, and the yantra traditionally drawn in turmeric ink on birch bark.
