This Month's Masik Shivratri: Mahashivaratri
Mahashivaratri
The one night a year when Shiva is said to have appeared as the lingam — a pillar of light — at midnight. Observed on Krishna Chaturdashi of Phalguna (Magha by southern reckoning), it is kept with an all-night vigil split into four watches, each with a different bath for the lingam.
How Masik Shivratri is kept
- Fast through the day.
- The puja window is Nishita Kaal, about 48 minutes around midnight, when Shiva is said to have appeared as the Linga.
- The fullest form worships Shiva in each of the night's four prahars, with abhisheka of water, curd, ghee and honey, and offers bilva leaves, aak flowers and vibhuti.
- Parana, the breaking of the fast, is after sunrise the next morning, ideally before Chaturdashi ends.
