The name comes from a Mahabharata episode: Karna, on reaching the afterlife, was offered gold instead of food, because in life he had given away wealth but never anna or water to his Pitrs. He was sent back to Earth for sixteen days to make the offerings — the fortnight that became Pitru Paksha, sealed on this Amavasya. Rituals are markedly regional. In Bengal, Odisha and Assam, families wade into the Ganga or a local river at dawn to offer til-tarpana (sesame and water poured through the fingers). In Maharashtra, Puran Poli is cooked at home and a share is set out for crows, cows and dogs before Brahmins are fed. In Karnataka the same tithi is observed as Mattu Amavasya. In Bengal, the pre-dawn All India Radio broadcast of Mahishasura Mardini also turns the day into the opening of Devi Paksha.
