Day three belongs to Chandraghanta, shown with ten arms bearing a trident, sword, bow and bell, riding a lion into battle readiness. A crescent moon shaped like a bell (ghanta) rests on her forehead, giving her this name. Her bravery is honoured with kheer as bhog, and devotees wear red, the colour of courage and energy, on this day.
Why is Sharad Navratri Tritiya observed?
Two stories are told of this form. When Shiva arrived for his wedding in his wild, ash-smeared, snake-draped appearance and frightened Parvati's family, she took the form of Chandraghanta to calm him into his gentler self before the ceremony continued. In another account, she rode out against the demon Jatukasura and his army of giant bats, the roar of her lion and the clang of her bell alone scattering them before her trident finished the battle. She is linked to the Manipura chakra at the navel, the seat of confidence and inner fire. Her golden complexion and third eye are said to grant devotees fearlessness through this day's worship.
