On Magha Shukla Navami in 1317 CE, Madhvacharya is said to have vanished under a shower of flowers while teaching the Aitareya Upanishad at Udupi's Ananteshwara temple. His followers call it a 'disappearance', not a death — they hold that he simply returned to Badarikashrama to rejoin his guru Vyasa.

The Udupi traditions trace most of their ritual life to this one acharya. Madhvacharya is said to have rescued a sinking Dwarka merchant ship off Malpe beach and accepted only a lump of gopi-chandana (sacred clay) in payment. The clay broke open to reveal a small standing Krishna holding a churning rod — the deity now worshipped at the Udupi Sri Krishna Matha. Thirty disciples could not lift it; only Madhva could, and he composed the twelve-verse Dvadasha Stotra while carrying it home. He then set up the Ashta Mathas — eight monasteries whose pontiffs still rotate Krishna's worship in turn under the Paryaya system. Counted as the third avatar of Vayu after Hanuman and Bhima, he is believed by Madhvas to still be at Badari with Vyasa, which is why this day is observed without the usual death rites.
