The Govardhana story is the heart of Kanuma. When Indra sent a week of storms to punish Gokula for skipping his worship, Krishna lifted Govardhana hill on his little finger and held it as an umbrella over the village and its cattle. Kanuma is the thanksgiving for that rescue — the cattle saved that day are honoured now. Two village sights mark the morning. Gangireddulu performers lead ornamented bulls from door to door; the bull bows on cue and households offer rice or coins. Haridasus — Vishnu mendicants balancing a brass akshaya-patra on the head — sing at dawn with a tambura. In coastal Andhra, especially the Godavari and Krishna districts, the afternoon belongs to kodi pandalu (cockfights) and bullock-cart races, fixtures that survive despite repeated court bans.
