The Padma Purana tells the story behind this narrow promise. Krishna narrates it to Yudhishthira. Malyavan, son of Indra's chief musician Chitrasena, was performing in the Nandana garden with the apsara Pushpavati. The two grew infatuated mid-song, lost their rhythm and pronunciation, and a furious Indra cursed them to fall to a Himalayan peak as pisachas — hobgoblins stripped of taste, smell, touch, and even sleep. Shivering through a bitter night under a peepal tree, eating only fruit, they unknowingly kept the Jaya Ekadashi fast. At Dvadashi dawn their celestial forms returned. That is why the vrat is said to target rebirth as a ghost or spirit specifically. Devotees skip grains and pulses, often take only fruit and water, and break the fast after sunrise on Dwadashi — mirroring the couple's accidental observance.
