The Phool Bangla at Banke Bihari is the day's signature sight. Through Sawan, the deity is enthroned inside a fresh canopy of roses, jasmine and marigolds — rebuilt daily by sevayats — and Hariyali Amavasya is when it draws the largest crowds. In Mewar, Udaipur holds a three-day Hariyali Amavasya Mela on the banks of Fateh Sagar lake, a tradition begun in 1898 by Maharana Fateh Singh to mark the lake's completion; the first day is reserved for the royal family, the next two for the public. Across Rajasthan and the Gangetic plain, families plant peepal, banyan, neem or amla saplings — the new moon in the rain month is seen as the best soil-and-sky moment of the year. Shiva temples also draw worshippers, since the day falls in his sacred month of Sawan.
