This Month's Amavasya: Bheemana Amavasya, Hariyali Amavasya and Shravana Amavasya
Bheemana Amavasya
A Karnataka women's vrata on the Ashadha new moon, centred on two clay lamps lit as Shiva and Parvati. Girls and wives pray for the long life of brothers and husbands, then a brother smashes open a flour ball — the kadubu — hiding coins inside.
Hariyali Amavasya
The Shravana new-moon when Vrindavan dresses its Banke Bihari in a Phool Bangla — a pavilion built entirely from fresh monsoon flowers. Three days before Hariyali Teej, devotees throng Mathura's Dwarkadhish and Vrindavan for this darshan, while Rajasthan and Haryana mark the day by planting saplings.
Shravana Amavasya
The new moon of Sawan — Shiva's most sacred month — when one tithi carries many names. North India calls it Hariyali Amavasya and plants saplings as the monsoon greens the land; Maharashtra keeps it as Pithori Amavasya for mothers; Tamil Nadu marks Aadi Amavasai with tarpanam by the sea.
How Amavasya is kept
- Bathe early, in a river if you can, or with a few drops of Ganga jal in the water.
- Those whose father has passed away offer tarpan with water and black sesame, calling each ancestor by name.
- Feed crows, a cow or a dog before the family meal, and give food, clothes or grain to someone in need.
- Offer water or milk to a Shivalinga and light a ghee or sesame oil lamp at the altar in the evening.
- A Monday Amavasya is Somvati Amavasya and a Saturday one Shani Amavasya, both sought out for ritual baths.
