Tradition tells of a boy bathing in the Purna river when a crocodile seized his leg. He shouted to his mother Aryamba — let me take sannyasa now, since my life is ending. She agreed, the crocodile released him, and Shankara left home as a wandering monk. He found his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada, a disciple of Gaudapada (author of the Mandukya-karika), and went on to write commentaries on the Prasthanatrayi — the Brahma Sutras, the principal Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. His public debate with the Mimamsa scholar Mandana Mishra, judged by Mandana's own wife Ubhaya Bharati, is the most famous episode of his life. He anchored Hindu monasticism by founding four mathas at the compass points — Sringeri, Puri, Dvaraka and Jyotir Math at Badrinath — before dying at Kedarnath, aged thirty-two.
