The Bhavishyottara Purana places the story at Badarikashrama. Mura, a son of Kashyapa, had driven the gods out of Amaravati. Vishnu fought him for a thousand years, then withdrew into the Himavati cave to rest. As Mura crept in to strike the sleeping god, a radiant maiden rose from Vishnu's body and beheaded the demon. Vishnu named her Ekadashi — 'the eleventh' — and granted her a boon: anyone who fasts on her day is freed of sin. The 'Grihastha' label marks the householder's version of the vrata. Instead of the waterless nirjala fast kept by renunciates, householders take phalahara — fruit, milk, sabudana — and skip only grains and pulses. The fast opens with a sankalpa on Dashami night, a vigil with Vishnu Sahasranama recitation, and ends with parana after sunrise on Dwadashi.
