The Bhavishya-uttara Purana tells the tale to Yudhishthira. Prince Lumpaka of Champavati, exiled by his father King Mahishmata for blaspheming Brahmins and Vaishnavas, takes shelter under an old peepal tree sacred to Vishnu. The Pausha cold knocks him out from Dashami night through Ekadashi afternoon — no food, no water, no sleep. That unintended fast wins him Vishnu's grace and his kingdom back. Two ritual details follow from the story. First, the offering is not cooked food but fresh seasonal fruit — citron, pomegranate, coconut, guava, betel, cloves, mango — placed before Vishnu. Second, jagaran (staying awake all night chanting Narayana's names) is treated as the heart of the vrat, said to yield the merit of a Rajasuya sacrifice. The name 'Saphala' — fruitful — points back to Lumpaka: a barren life made fruitful by one accidental night.
