Parashurama was born in the first prahara of night, so the vrat is tied to Pradosha Kala (dusk) rather than sunrise. The observant keep Mauna (silence) through the day, bathe again at evening, and offer arghya with the Jamadagnisuto mantra — petitioning not wealth but Brahmatva, spiritual elevation. The night closes with japa of the 'Shri Rama' nama. Along the Konkan and Malabar coasts the day carries extra weight. Legend says Parashurama hurled his axe into the sea from Gokarna and reclaimed land down to Kanyakumari — the strip Keralites still call Parashurama Kshetra. He is said to have set up 108 Shiva shrines across it and to have settled Brahmin communities, including the Chitpavans of the Konkan, to atone for his slaughter of the Kshatriyas.
